This page shows some recent before and after examples of our restoration undertaken on  antique scientific and items of interest.

We were asked recently to repair a whimshurst machine.

Below is a picture of this machine as you can see it is in a bit of a mess. We have been asked by the client to repair this machine in keeping with the period process, contemporary to the period of manufacture, also when it is restored for it to be in working condition.

These machines were used to create an electric charge by a process of electrostatic induction this one in particular dates from around 1890.

In a Wimshurst machine, the two insulated disks and their metal sectors rotate in opposite directions passing the crossed metal neutralizer bars and their brushes. An imbalance of charges is induced, amplified, and collected by two pairs of metal combs with points placed near the surfaces of each disk. These collectors are mounted on insulating supports and connected to the output terminals. The positive feedback increases the accumulating charges exponentially until the dielectric breakdown voltage of the air is reached and a spark jumps across the gap.
