About Green and Cockburns Antique Restoration and Repair Service

Malcolm Green

Malcolm Green of Green and Cockburn has gained a prestigious reputation for his craftsmanship and skills. The bulk of the business is furniture and clock restoration, in latter years Malcolm has been used as an adviser and presenter on the BBC for antique restoration programs.

Antique clock restoration

In our antiques clock restoration department we restore clock movements in exactly the same way as when they were made with the added help of modern machine tools. We undertake dial and face painting and clock re-silvering in exactly the same fashion as when they were orginally made.

Antique furniture restoration

In our antique furniture restoration department we undertake French polishing work and restore clock cases, antique chairs, tables, gilded mirror and picture frames (including gilding and carving). All materials used are as they would have been, including animal glue and rabbit skin for gilding.

Invisible repairs

We pride ourselves in what we call invisible furniture repairs. This means that if we have restored a table, chair or a clock case you should not be able to distinguish where the repair has been carried out. This is work that can only be carried out by extremely competent French polishers. Don't just take our word for it look at some of our recent restoration projects.

Green and Cockburn Antique Restoration have been successfully trading for over 35 years.

Investment in antiques.

In these days of apparent hardship, countries not being able to pay their way, those that are lucky enough to have savings wondering whether they might lose all they have.

This seems to be the general state of the news, one thing i have to say though is that good antique restorers have never been busier as those that are in the know are investing in good quality antique furniture.

Antiques have never been so cheap as lots of people are selling their items simply to live.

This seems a sad scenario to take advantage of others I’m not suggesting that is what you do but i am suggesting to go along to your auction room and buy good quality antique clocks and furniture the best investment is in pre 1750s antique clocks and furniture .

If you wish to be really clever and can afford it the best thing to buy is early walnut furniture or early oak or if you’re really lucky and can afford it early Dutch marquetry furniture circa 1790.

The secret seems to be in buying items that have a special interest of age or generally items that are unusual even for their given period.

Sometimes if you go to your local provincial auction room perhaps on a day that is not one of their specials as on this day many experts will come as they will have received some form of advertising telling them that it is on, but on a general sale day in the week try and pick a day that raining if you need to be really clever.

A client of mine did exactly this and managed to buy a particularly fine 17th century wine table.

This wine table is made from walnut and burr oak circa 1680 this wine table being on a tripod base with feet that looked like little boots, on the knee of the legs there are acanthus leaves. This table was acquired for somewhere in the region of £650 I believe, which might be a lot of money for a table, if this was not a documented item and worth in the region of £8000.

 Church restoration and period interiors.

A great deal of work that we take on is large scale restorations of period interiors, furniture and clocks in Churches and Cathedrals where we undertake the restoration of period timber in relation to woodworm treatment, solidification of rotting timber and carving, in relation to the individual period concept such as the restoration of broken rood screens that may require carved tracery or the restoration of rood screen paintwork.

We are also skilled in the restoration of stonework and of course the restoration and maintenance of church turret clocks where we are able to make any missing part necessary.

We are willing to collect Antique Clocks or Furniture from your area including North London, Barnet and Finchley.
