Antique Valuations ... probate, inheritance tax or insurance valuations

We have been restoring antiques for over 35 years and we are able to provide a thorough and comprehensive antiques valuation service.

Approved Antiques Valuers

We are approved Antique valuers to tax office standards and are often asked by auction houses, the police and insurance companies to value single antique pieces or whole estates.

We are often used by our clients to view at auction on their behalf to evaluate an item and then report back to its authenticity and value.

When we carry out antiques valuations for insurance, inheritance tax or probate, each item is individually documented and digital photographs are taken for later reference. All antique items are indexed linked with your insurance company i.e. we are able to project what the item will be worth in later years, taking into account inflation. Items are valued at provincial auction prices as of IHIA 1984s 160.

Malcolm has also undertaken quite a lot of valuation work for the restoration roadshow with Eric Knowles on behalf of the BBC and is a member of the restoration team.

Valuing aiding and advising for probate and inheritance tax purposes

We are skilled valuers and advisers to help you in what can sometimes be quite a complicated and difficult time.

When somebody dies and you are unfortunately left to sort everything out, maybe you're the executor of the estate or maybe you are somebody who is simply not sure what the next step is.

We can advise on any necessary procedures that can be expected of you by the tax office and how to follow the best procedure to save as much money as possible.

Having your clock or item of furniture properly insured in case of theft.

Make sure your clock is insured properly with a valuation in relation to its proper age and value.

Antique clocks such as long case clocks have had a massive price increase in the last five years many people who are not quite sure where to put their money have been investing in grandfather clocks in particular other items to have increased are 17th-century walnut and Dutch marquetry items.

Maybe because of this antique clock and furniture burglary is on the increase, in the early months of 2011 we were asked by many clients to restore their clock or antique item after some damage had occurred to it through a burglary.

Also unfortunately by some clients who had only a photograph of their missing clock sadly we were only able to offer advice in this instance.

Unfortunately though some of these clients were under insured, therefore they could not be offered the full value of their missing item by the insurance company and the restoration of the antique could only be partly undertaken, unless of course as in many cases the client wished to pay for it out of their own pocket.

It's very important to make sure that your antique item is valued correctly and that this is undertaken by reputable antique restoration and valuation company such as ourselves and that the clock or valuable antique item is photographed and index linked with your insurance company.

our process of valuation is to come to your property and to photograph everything that is of an antique nature.

The client is very often not aware of the value or the age of the item therefore we go from room to room very often finding things that are of extreme value to the client surprise.

The items on the photographs are identified by us and valued accordingly this valuation is undertaken by our knowledge of antiques and also by our comprehensive database listing.

We have access to auction databases across the world spanning the last 10 years.

These individual items are referenced with the databases and given a number, any insurance company checking at a later date can access these numbers if they wish to check the reality of the value.

If the client wishes, their items can also be geo-tagged this means quite simply that the photograph or electronic image will be tagged with the geographic location and time when it was taken, this process is quite helpful to prove that this item was in your possession.

Valuation of extremely damaged items

Antiques that have been damaged by fire or water are rather hard for the average valuer to comprehend, but as we are antique restorers as well as valuers, we are used to seeing things in an extremely damaged state, therefore valuing them in this condition is the norm.

A Recent valuation

We recently valued two William De Morgan dishes for a client which sold at auction on our advice for £20,000 .

Insurance work burglary flood fire and general insurance damage

After a burglary or a flood it's really hard to know which way to turn, or maybe you simply just want have the items  valued prior to selling, after many years in the business we are used to dealing with relevant police forces in tracing lost items, we also have a vast database to compare your item.

We are experienced in assisting our clients with insurance claims.

After a flood or fire often your item can be damaged beyond recognition.

Insurance claims, Phone us prior to contacting your insurance company, otherwise it is possible that your fine antique items may be passed on to one of the businesses employed by insurance companies who clean carpets, clean everything but as cheaply as possible. We can liaise with the insurance company on your behalf so as to maintain the value and integrity of your antique item.

Investment in Antiques

In these troubled times of recession people are investing in antiques more and more. We have found that pre Victorian items are generally on the increase in particular 18th and 17th-century long case clocks, which people are finding have a much better investment than putting their money in the bank.

We are willing to provide advice on any antique item purchase, with a view to investment.

Antique restoration training workshops

From time to time Green & Cockburn will share their valuable restoration skills and techniques through running a series of training workshops. These workshops are designed to allow the amateur or professional to learn more about the art of antiques restoration, renovation and conservation as Malcolm Green of Green & Cockburn demonstrates work being carried out on furniture, clocks and other antique items.
