Antique valuation for probate and insurance purposes.
This blog is because I have been asked why our knowledge as valuers can be more comprehensive than some of the other websites offering valuation services.
We have a good liaison with most auction houses, we are used as professional valuers by the BBC, and if we find something of great value we can point you in the right direction for you to sell your item, for instance it may best to sell your furniture in Sotheby’s auction and to sell your paintings and fine art in other auction house therefore maintaining the best overall price for your items.
There are many websites at the moment offering to value your antique items in fact some do it for as little as £1.50 per item.
I have even seen some valuers offering to value the items for free(these items can of course be anything and not necessarily an item of any value) which confuses me a little as to how they get paid for their time and effort and of course a lot of these valuations is done online by a photograph which is really just not possible as one can only value properly if they are holding at looking at the item.
We will not charge the client if we get to the property and we find that there is nothing of any value whatsoever and we will tell the client that if it’s for a probate process the very simple fact that there is nothing of any value is in fact a declaration that can be made to the taxman.
Our Process and knowledge of valuation is to value items that are of an antique nature or have a contemporary value such as many fine Art Nouveau items, we tend to specialise in Victorian and Georgian and Jacobean items dating back to the Roman period, we do not however value modern items, washing machines, fridges at the like!
Antique clock and antique furniture restoration is something that we undertake on a regular basis and in fact most restorers will have a much better idea of valuation then most dealers.
Therefore as we have been restoring and valuing antique clocks and furniture, paintings and fine art for over 37 years we have a much better idea of valuation than some valuers, who might have been on a course or have been dealers who simply look at the item from the outside rather than having taken the item apart to establish the finer detail
We often find that when we go to the property the client has very little idea as to the value of the clock or the item of furniture or porcelain even though their items have been valued previously.
We have a very good record and have received recommendation from many auction houses and individual clients and the BBC for our help and honesty and knowledge used in the valuation process.
If you phone one of the major auction houses and you have a property that has items for valuation and you have furniture, clocks, paintings, and any other items such as Silver small porcelain items sometimes known as Smalls they will charge you separately to have a furniture expert call, or clock expert, or paintings expert
Where’s we will have one charge and one valuer which we can guarantee will most definitely charge you less than the major auction houses to value everything on the property and advise you accordingly as to the best place to sell your items.
We can also advise as to how to proceed with your probate, according to tax office procedures.
