We have been advised to replace the rope in our grandfather clock with chain to reduced the need for maintenance caused by the fraying of the rope. Since this would require modification of the original mechanism, we are reluctant to do so. I would be very grateful for your opinion on this.

Tessa,
These days we also advise people to go for what’s known as a chain conversion.
This is done quite simply because the ropes but one could get in the past for longcase clocks are not available.
You can buy so-called ropes made for 30 hour longcase clocks these are invariably made in China.
They are by no means suitable therefore we always suggest a chain conversion.
In the period of when your clock was made if you were particularly wealthy you would probably have had chain.
But if you were a person that was watching their pennies somewhat you would probably have had rope.
Rope has many problems associated with it it gathers dirt and grease and dust etc.
How this had been of some help, make sure that whoever fits this chain conversion does it in such a way that he does not devalue the clock.
Kind regards Malcolm
